Negro League legends aug. 29

The Black Athletes & Lost Legends Association, Inc. will sponsor Negro League Baseball Legends Night at Ripkin Stadium Friday, Aug. 29. Tickets are $9.50 and gates open at 6 p.m., with events beginning at 6 p.m. as well. Highlights include autograph signing, a Negro League exhibit, Negro League Merchandise sale and Poet Larry O'Neal.

These players are set to attend: Geraldine Day, Hubert "Bert" Simmons, Luther Atkinson, Eddie Banks, Jimmy Bland, Al Burrows, Leo "Sike" Burnett, Eddie Burton, Willie Fordham, Pedro Sierra, Bob Scott, James Tillman and Jim Weedon. They will exhibit shadow ball on the field.

HCC registration through Aug. 30

Registration for Harford Community College’s (HCC) Fall credit courses will be held in the college’s Student Center through Aug. 30. Walk-in registration will be held in the center from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. Registration will be from  9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 30. The college will be closed Sept. 1, Labor Day. Classes start Sept. 2.

Students may register by mail or fax through Aug. 30. Forms and more information are included in the Schedule of Summer/Fall 2008 Credit Classes . The schedule is available at the welcome center in the Student Center and can be accessed at www.harford.edu. Online registration will continue through Sept. 1.

Students may call the college academic advising division at 410-836-4301 to make appointments for one-stop sessions or to meet with academic advisers. Students who have never attended HCC or who attended before the spring of 2006 should complete an HCC application for enrollment prior to registering. Registration also is accepted at the college’s Aberdeen Proving Ground Center. Call 410-272-2338 for hours and information. Baltimore Symphony in HdG Sept. 12

The Havre de Grace Arts Commission will bring the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra to the city’s high school auditorium in an open seating concert Sept. 12. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m.

Marin Alsop will conduct the performance, which features Ilya Finkelshteyn on cello. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children ages six and older. Organizers ask that no children under 6 attend.

Havre de Grace High School is situated at 700 Congress Ave. Tickets may be purchased at the Havre de Grace Visitor’s Center or by sending a check with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the HdG Arts Commission, 10 Concord Place, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.

Procurement expo set for Sept. 16

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council is sponsoring a regional procurement expo from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at Martins West on Dogwood Road, off the Baltimore Beltway at Security Boulevard. The 2008 Procurement Diversity Expo, hosted by the Baltimore Regional Cooperative Purchasing Committee, will provide small, minority and women owned businesses a networking opportunity to learn about business opportunities from local procurement officers.


Participating in the event will be representatives of procurement offices in Annapolis, Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties.

scooterA Dazon Diamond Back Scooter signed by the entire IronBirds Team as well as Cal Ripken, Jr., Billy Ripken and Vi Ripken, will be the grand prize at the drawing of the annual Ball and Brawl fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County on Sept. 27.

Blair Tyler, senior loan officer of the Mortgage Guys, recently presented the scooter (retail value $1,300) George Heidelmaier, a Boys and Girls Club member and President of It’s PayDay.

Tickets are $10 each or three for $25. The winner does not have to be present at the fundraiser, which will be held in the Residents Club at Bulle Rock.

Win an iPod from HCC, ends in November
