Booth home open for tours April-October
Tudor Hall, the childhood home of actor and presidential assassin John Wilkes Booth, will be open for reservations-only tours the last Sunday of each month, April-October. Tour times are 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on April 26, May 31, June 28, July 26, August 30, September 27 and October 25.
The tour explores the ground floor of the home, which presently serves as the temporary headquarters for the Harford County Center for the Arts. The tour is free, but there is a suggested donation of $3 per person for visitors above the age of 13.
In the early to mid 1800s, English immigrants Mary Ann and Junius Booth purchased 150 acres in Harford County and operated a productive farm from a log house on the property. Construction on a new home – Tudor Hall – began in 1851, but Junius Booth died in 1852, before it was completed. The Gothic Revival cottage off Rt. 22 in Bel Air was intended to be the couple’s dream home, after Junius Booth retired from acting. Junius Booth was also a highly-acclaimed Shakespearian actor on the American stage, as were his sons Edwin and John Wilkes. John Wilkes Booth later cemented his place in history when he shot and killed President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
The home underwent several changes of ownership before it was purchased by Harford County in 2006. Call 443-243-7571 for reservations and more information.
