Haitian relief concert in Bel Air Feb. 5
The Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra will perform to benefit Haiti relief efforts Friday, Feb. 5, 8 p.m. at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Bel Air. The concert is free, with donations requested to support Lutheran World Relief. Guest artists include Linda Molina on violin and sopranos Devonna Rowe and Emma Zyriek. Non-perishable food items also are requested in support of local food banks.

New exhibit at Arts by the Bay opens Feb. 5, reception
A new exhibit at Arts by the Bay in Havre de Grace opens Feb. 5 and closes April 25. An artists’ reception with light refreshments, is scheduled 7 p.m.-9 p.m. opening night. Arts by the Bay is at 500 B Warren Street and is open Fridays and Saturdays, 12 p.m.-5 p.m., Sundays 1 p.m.-5 p.m. and Mondays-Thursdays by appointment only.

“You Can Afford College” Event at HCC Feb. 6
Complete the 2010-2011 Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA) with professional assistance.  Bring the following for both parent and student:  FAFSA on the Web Worksheet (www.fafsa.gov), pin number to sign electronically (www.pin.ed.gov), Social Security number, 2009 Federal Income Tax Return (2008 Federal Return if you have not yet filed for 2009), and 2009 W-2 statements. The event is Feb. 6, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Harford Community College’s Joppa Hall. For more information, call 443-412-2257.

Cabaret Concert Series launches in HdG Feb. 6
The Maryland Conservatory of Music is launching its inaugural Cabaret Concert Series with a performance by Faire Isle Feb. 6. The Conservatory’s Havre de Grace location is at the corner of Union Avenue and Warren Street. Faire Isle features Celtic sounds, with bagpipes, Irish drums, fiddle, vocals, guitar, mandolin and audience participation. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and tickets include snacks. Cocktail, wine, beer and sodas will be offered for sale.  Tickets for this event only are $20, with tickets for the three-concert series $45. Tickets are on sale at the Arts by the Bay Gallery, Laurrapin Grille, Bomboys, the Office of Tourism and in Bel Air at the Maryland Conservatory Office on the campus of John Carroll School. Thomas-Fann at HCC Feb. 10 for African American history presentations
In celebration of African American history month, historian and genealogist Velma Thomas-Fann will be the guest speaker at Harford.  Fann has authored several books including the award-winning Lest We Forget: The Passage from African to Slavery and Emancipation.  She is also the creator of the Black Holocaust Exhibit in Atlanta. Reception and book signing immediately following the presentation. Feb. 10, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Harford Community College, Edgewood Hall, Room 132. Learn to make maple syrup in Monkton Feb. 14
Learn to make maple syrup -- from identifying trees to tapping and collecting sap to boiling sap down to syrup -- at Ladew Topiary Gardens Feb. 14 in Monkton. Celebrate Mardi Gras in HdG on Bourbon Street Feb. 16, Parade and Parties
The sun won’t set on Fat Tuesday without a celebration on Bourbon Street in Havre de Grace! The Laurrapin Grille is sponsoring a parade to benefit the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps, and local businesses and artists will prepare floats in the traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras style. Parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and will proceed from the 600 block of Bourbon Street to Washington Street. Attend post-procession parties at the city’s restaurant and bars. Wine Expo 2010 at HCC Feb. 21
The HCC Alumni and Friends Association sponsors an afternoon of wine, delectable hors d’oeuvres, and desserts.  Enjoy sampling wine from around the world while representatives from 35 wine companies share their knowledge.  Proceeds benefit the HCC Alumni and Friends Association. Feb. 21, 2 p.m.- 6 p.m. at Harford Community College’s Susquehanna Center. You must be 21 years of age or older to attend.
