January's Featured Manager: Charlie Rose

Rose says, ""Conceive it, achieve it, believe it"

charlie_roseName and Title: Chuck Rose, director of the Walter and Betty Ward Family Center Y in the Box Hill Corporate Center in Abingdon.

Personal background: Rose grew up in North East, in Cecil County, graduating from North East High School. He has been married for 35 years to the former Sue Felton from Rising Sun. They have three children Geoff, 31, Brian, 28, and Deanna, 24.

Professional background: : “I served 20 years on active duty in the U. S. Air Force at more than 12 locations around the world, working primarily in sports and recreation management,” said Rose. He did the same work as an Air Force civilian employee for another 14 years. Rose, who has a bachelor’s degree in sports management from Towson University, has worked for the Y of Central Maryland since July 2007. He also is a coach and instructor at Diamond Pros Baseball in Forest Hill. Rose also played a role in organizing programs of county agencies dealing with youth and youth issues.

Keys to success:
"I think a key to my success has been being open minded to other ideas and thoughts and also being a people person,” Rose said, further commenting, “I especially love kids and helping them achieve success in whatever they want to do.”

As an example, he pointed to his organizing, at parents’ behest, a youth basketball team at Andrews Air Force Base. The team won a national championship and every player went on to receive a full basketball scholarship at a Division 1 college. Among the players were Ty Lawson, a starting point guard at the University of North Carolina, and Dante Cunningham, starting forward at Villanova.

tell_us_calloutGoals: Rose said his goals are “to continue to serve people and help others. My dream is to construct and operate a large indoor and outdoor sports complex aimed at teaching all sports, but specifically baseball, to youth, teens and adults of all ages.”

Advice: “If you can conceive it and believe it, you will achieve it, ” said Rose, adding, “Stay the course, be strong and believe in what you are doing.”

What could be done to make business more successful: Rose observed, “Well, the Y has been pretty successful for over 153 years but I think continuing to be a positive influence on youth and families while also providing an avenue of hope and opportunity will lead to success in our type of business.”
