bucha_awardThe Harford County Chamber of Commerce hosted its 32nd Annual Military Appreciation Luncheon May 21, the 8th on post at Aberdeen Proving Ground’s (APG) Top of the Bay restaurant. More than 200 guests from business, the military and the community came to show their support of the post, its soldiers and its employees.

Garrison Commander Col. Jeffrey Weissman spoke at the luncheon and said, “Businesses are integral in providing a cohesive community for the Army. Businesses have long supported soldiers and their families. On behalf of APG, I tell you we are proud to be a part of your community.”

Weissman noted that 2009 was declared the Year of the Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) by the Secretary of the Army, and shared a few of his views about NCOs, four of whom were later recognized. He said, “As a young officer, I learned that NCOs were my official best friends. They had my back.”

The 2009 award recipients were:
Sgt. Elizabeth Thompson received the APG Noncommissioned Officer of the Year
award; Sgt. Benjamin Salazar received the APG Soldier of the Year
award; Sgt. Abigail Lentz received the APG Marine NCO of the Year award, and Tech Sgt. Steven Mountz received the APG Air Force NCO of the Year award.

Pete Bucha, a retired Army Colonel who works at Battelle and is a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, received the organization’s Maj. Gen. John C. Appel Award for his leadership and service to the Chamber regarding military affairs.

General Paul S. Izzo, senior commander for APG and commander of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, was to speak at the luncheon, but was called away to attend the funeral of a fallen Maryland soldier.
