Alcore workers walk Appalachian Trail -- in Edgewood Jack McLaughlin
Teams of employees at Alcore, Inc., in the Lakeside Industrial Park in Edgewood logged enough miles during a 12 week lunch time fitness program to have walked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine more than three times. Alcore kicked off the program encouraging daily walking and healthy living on April 29, National Walk at Lunch Day. Alcore, part of the M.C. Gill Corporation of Companies, makes metallic honeycomb core products. The theme was a “Virtual Walk in the Woods,” based on the Bill Bryson book Walk In the Woods, about rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail. Seven teams of seven participating employees competed in the program. Each walker’s miles were tracked each week, contributing to his or her team’s total mileage. The mileage moved each team’s flag an equivalent distance along a 12 foot long map of the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail, which goes through 14 states, from Spring Mountain, GA to Baxter Peak-Katahdin, ME. The winning team walked a total of 1509.82 miles, taking their flag well into Massachusetts. The 7,7029.04 combined mileage walked by all the Alcore teams was enough to walk the trail from Georgia to Maine 3.3 times.
