Geek Squad lands at Aberdeen B&G Club
Members of Best Buy’s Geek Squad descended on the Aberdeen Boys and Girls Club July 8 to set up a brand new theater room. Best Buy’s District Services Manager Nathan Evans, who joined the Board of Directors for the Harford County Boys and Girls Clubs a month ago, arranged for the room, which was on the club members’ wish list. Matt Duda, Geek Squad deputy field marshal, and his crew installed the high-tech electronics. The new room features a 92 inch theater projection screen, flanked by two 42-inch screen TVs; 1,000 watt 5.1 surround sound; a DVD player and Xbox 360, Wii and Playstation 3 gaming consoles, all operated by a computerized remote control. Duda said, “We’re also contributing entertainment room furniture, two portable 22-inch TV/DVD combo units and $3,000 to $4,000 in labor. Having the chance to do this, my guys are very excited. And you can see the excitement in the kids’ faces as they watch us everything in.” During the Aberdeen club’s summer camp program, club members will use the room as part of their day. When school starts, however, use will be incentive based, tied to attendance, homework completion and grades. About the donation, Harford County Boys and Girls Clubs Executive Director Randy Acosta said, “We’re riding the momentum and bringing in new partners. Kids vote with their feet.”
Boys and Girls Club membership is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 18. Membership is $5 per year. No child has ever been turned away, however. Many opportunities exist for children to "earn" their memberships. The Harford County organization oversees clubs in Aberdeen, Bel Air, Edgewood, Havre de Grace and Westminster in Carroll County.
