hopkins_farmHarford County’s Buy Local campaign to promote locally grown agricultural products is turning heads – literally – at the intersection of Rt. 155 and Aldino Road near Havre de Grace.

Ohio-based barn artist Scott Hagan is painting the campaign’s logo, slogan and Web site, www.harfordfarms.com, on the side of two barns selected by the Agricultural Advisory Board last year.

Above, Aldino farmer David Hopkins works a John Deere in front of the mural-in-progress being painted on his barn. The second mural appears on the side of a barn owned by Mr. and Mrs. Butch Bachman on Harford Road in Fallston.

Plans for the Buy Local campaign include photographing the barns for billboards “to link urban and rural communities," said John Sullivan, deputy chief of staff for Harford County agriculture. He also said there are plans to encourage local restaurants to use locally grown and produced agricultural products, through the Buy Local initiative.

The barns will be unveiled officially in a ceremony at the Hopkins farm June 26, with Harford County’s Farm Visitation Day scheduled for the Fawn View Meadows Farm at 2200 Channel Road in Pylesville June 28.
