Tomabck named Harford County Public School Superintendent

tombackDr. Robert Tomback, Area Assistant Superintendent of the Baltimore County public school system, has been named Harford County Public Schools Superintendent of Schools.

Tomback, 58, was among 16 applicants for the position.  After screening by the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, the Harford County Board of Education narrowed the field of candidates to four. His contract will be signed at the Harford County Board of Education’s June 8 meeting. He will assume his duties July 1.

“Dr. Tomback will bring a fresh look at strengthening our academic and instructional programs to help increase our student achievement,” said Harford County Board of Education President Patrick Hess in a June 3 news release about the appointment.

Tomback earned his doctorate in human development education at the University of Maryland. In his current post with Baltimore County he is the instructional and administrative leader for 34 schools with approximately 25,000 students. Before becoming assistant superintendent in 2007, he was a principal, executive assistant, assistant principal, department chair and social studies teacher.

In a statement issued about the appointment, Maryland Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick said, “Robert Tomack has a strong commitment to students and staff and I’m certain he will continue the great work that has taken place in the Harford County public schools over the past decade.” After the county board of education’s formal vote to hire
Tomback is made Monday, is named will be forward to Grasmick for approval.

commentDr. Jacqueline Haas, who had headed the county’s public school system since July 1999, died Dec. 30 following an asthma attack at her Aberdeen home. She was 59. Patricia Skebeck, the public school executive director of elementary education, has been serving as interim superintendent. She is retiring this summer after 45 years in education.
