Sailing school celebrates 10 years

Mary Paramore,
HBL Associate Editor

BaySail on the Chesapeake celebrated 10 years in business at the Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace with a two-day open house recently.

Owned by Tammy and Todd Hess for the past three years, they carry on the business started by Kim Richards, who now lives in Washington D.C.

BaySail offers sailing instruction on Capri 22-foot boats, and for the advanced course, 30 to 41-foot yachts, with lessons structured for up to four students per session. Manager Steve Young says the small class size ensures each student receives personal attention from BaySail’s experienced staff. The BaySail program is accredited by the American Sailing Association, has earned the organization’s Gold Standard Rating and has been chosen as its School of the Year.

Over the open house weekend, which was sunny on Saturday but blustery on Sunday, about 200 guests enjoyed free sailboat rides, food and drinks, including a special flavor of Bomboy’s ice cream churned up for the occasion. Attendees learned about sailing lessons, organized sailing trips to the Caribbean and yacht chartering through the school. BaySail also offers customized sailing courses, based on individual needs.

The Hess’s say Harford County is the ideal setting for a sailing school because the Havre de Grace harbor area is not crowded, allowing beginners plenty of room to get comfortable with the sport, while advanced sailors have quick access to greater Chesapeake Bay.
