Encore! Harford Dancing for Arts Stars to dance again

January 7 , 2009 -- Seems the Harford County public figures who learned to dance to help raise funds for a permanent home for the Center for the Arts want an encore performance. They’ll get their chance Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Bel Air Armory during a learn-to-dance social organized by Dancing with Friends.

Dancing with Friends owner Tom Rzepnicki and his business partner Debbie Howley trained the dancers and donated costume rental for the hugely successful fund raiser organized by e2 (Elegant Events). Now, the dancers are coming back, this time to show other beginners they, too, can learn to dance.

Reprising their roles will be:

  • County Executive David Craig, dancing the samba
  • Attorney Eric McLauchlin, dancing he cha-cha
  • APGFCU Development Director Claudia Holman, dancing the cha-cha
  • Harford Community College President Jim LaCalle and his wife, an HCC associate vice president, swing dancing
  • Will Nori, a Clark Turner vice president, dancing the hustle
  • Library Director Audra Caplan, dancing the rumba

Dancing with Friends regularly organizes socials so novices can learn to dance quickly and beginners can practice their new moves. Admission in $15, with a free dance lesson (this time, the cha-cha) at 7 p.m., beginning student dancing from 8:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and social dancing from 8:30 p.m.-11 p.m. The Dancing for the Arts encore will begin at 9:15 p.m.

Parties of eight are encouraged to reserve tables to sit together; however, organizers ask that tables not be reserved for parties of less than eight, to reduce unused seating and increase dancing floor space at the event. For reservations, contact Rzepnicki at (410) 294-1099 or email him at tim@dancewithfriends.com.

The Center for the Arts fund raiser has not taken its final bow, either. The People’s Choice Award will be awarded in May. Harford Cable Network will televise the gala fundraiser during February, March and April so the public can vote for their favorite dancers. Each vote will cost $1, which will support building a permanent home for the Center for the Arts. The nonprofit presently operates from the historic Tudor Hall in Bel Air, but seeks a permanent home accessible to all, to present, exhibit and educate in the disciplines of dance, theatre, music, and literary and visual arts.
