HARFORD COMMUNITY COLLEGE RECEIVES GRANTS

December 12, 2008 – Harford Community College has received two grants for regional BRAC growth planning from the Office of Economic Adjustment, Department of Defense and in coordination with the Chesapeake Science and Security Corridor Consortium. The total grant award is $355,500 and will fund two projects: a feasibility study for expansion of the Higher Education and Conference Center at HEAT and a regional community college workforce training assessment.

The feasibility study will examine existing and BRAC-induced demographic changes, estimate population requirements for STEM programming and, estimate the facilities and costs necessary to meet those requirements.

The workforce training assessment will be a collaborative effort among Harford Community College, the Community College of Baltimore County, Baltimore City Community College and Cecil College. A team of consultants will:

  • identify the needs of workers and employers associated with the realignment of APG
  • develop appropriate curricula
  • match job requirements to existing curricula
  • research facility planning to build educational capacity to meet those need

Since 2006, Harford Community College and Harford County government have been working to strengthen regional planning efforts through the Chesapeake Science and Security Corridor Consortium. The CSSC coordinates planning with eight jurisdictions in three states o assess the opportunities and develop strategies for meeting the challenges the BRAC process will have on communities surrounding Aberdeen Proving Ground.
