Editorial: Bill Bates
With his high forehead head and serious demeanor, Bill Bates looked just like what he was for several years -- a high school English teacher. In a 2005 Manager’s column in the Harford Business Ledger, described himself as “terminally shy.” He overcame that and those who got to know him soon discovered this soft spoken, reserved man had a sense of humor, delivering deadpan an extremely dry bit of wit and then looking at you with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a slight smile on his lips...
He probably will be best remembered for several books focusing on the history of Harford County through old photos. His books, released through Arcadia Publishing, included Images of America: Bel Air, Harford County in Vintage Postcards, Images of America: Havre de Grace, Harford Then & Now and Images of America: Aberdeen Proving Ground. Discount store tradition continues
Savings-savvy shoppers going through big name brand withdrawal since C-Mart closed can rest easy. The regionally famous discount store reopened Feb. 3 in the old C-Mart location, 1503-11 Rock Spring Road, Forest Hill, under a new name, The Big Tarp Company Store.
The new enterprise is the work of Keith Silberg, son and nephew of C-Mart’s original owners/operators. What started as dabbling turned into a career for Silberg, a calling that continues a family tradition of retail that goes back to his grandparent’s store on Bond Street in Bel Air, which operated during the 1970s. Bel Air couple buys Home Instead franchise
Brice and Candice Irwin have purchased the Home Instead Senior Care office that serves Harford and Cecil counties. They acquired the nine year old, independently owned and operated company, part of an international franchise, from Claude and Leslie Lewis. The Home Instead Senior Care office is at 221 S. Main Street in Bel Air. (read more)
Nominations sought for America's Oldest Worker
Nominations are being sought for America’s Oldest Outstanding Worker. Nominees must be 100 years of age or older, currently employed, working at least 20 hours each week for pay and involved in his or her community. The deadline for nominations is March 15. (read more)

Harford’s Got Talent competition to award $1,500, raise funds for CFA
Harford’s Got Talent is the latest TV-show themed fund raiser for a permanent Center for the Arts in Harford County. The deadline for aspiring individuals, group performers (up to 15 people) and visual artists is March 12 for the May 1 contest. Harford’s Got Talent is open to people ages 13 and above who live, work, perform or study regularly in Harford County of have done so in the past. (read more)
